sustainable transformation
Information is the past, present and the
future. Relevant, timely and correct information is the
key to sustainable transformation and a system and structural change that
can leverage on peoples strive to address climate change and global warming.
A system that can handle new information, new challenges and new ways of
living and working, can in itself trigger and contribute to further positive
development.
There are
limits to growth as we know it and the challenges to ensure a
sustainable future is becoming more and more evident. There may just be
enough resources, material, money, resilience and time - just about - to act
and halt the current direction before it reaches the tipping point. Avoid
falling in to the trap of the tragedy of the commons to stop destroying
natural capital, resources and ecological services like clean air and
water, and truly see how every single action adds up to the bigger picture.
Adopt a common, relevant way to measure the real value of natural
resources and ecological services to complement the information provided by
GDP, gross domestic product. Consider net energy efficiency that takes into
account the energy needed to produce energy and reduce emissions and
pollution. The longer the delay the greater the challenge - action makes the
future bright.
Technological advancements can help
mankind achieve a sustainable future. By using the capacity the nature
provide to produce renewable energy, electricity and heat; and the
capabilities of the developed world to help close the digital divide and
provide access to information and education, the world is one step further
on the right track.
"How good a human nature does society
permit?" (Maslow 1971)
There is
a need for more than technology to
enable a sustainable transformation,
and the "soft tools" have been know for some time to enable mankind to
trigger the system change and reverse the direction. However, they are no
ordinary tools and may be somewhat surprising and controversial in their
simplicity: visioning - and
taking action, networking - realising that everyone is in the same
boat and to connect and work with people, truth-telling - being
honest and open, learning - continuously learn by doing, dare
to fail, adjust, experiment and share experiences, and loving -
reward individuals and a society that permits the best of human nature.
The
beauty and power of simplicity to live sustainable in the environment - so
what are we waiting for? Do the right thing.
